Finding the right career
|
David excelled in high school, so much so that he was in the Gifted/Talented Program. He was also intellectually and emotionally mature and clear minded for his age. His interests ranged from the sciences to the outdoorsand the arts.
In his junior year, he had a profound spiritual experience which began to color how he experienced his world. He toyed with the idea of studying philosophy at a seminary with the intent of exploring the priesthood. This was encouraged by the local priests in the parish who took an active interest in his formation and exploration.
He didn't take that path initially, however, and enrolled in a university to study veterinary sciences. His first year was tumultuous and he transferred to another university and enrolling in its seminary program.

He found the academics stimulating, but he sorely missed the outdoors and his enjoyment of gardening. The cloistered lifestyle with so many men of so many backgrounds was stifling and he took every opportunity to walk the grounds and to be alone. A natural prankster, he felt it hard to remain serious all of the time. He became disillusioned with the fact that not everyone coming in to the program had had the same spiritual awakening he had. He questioned many of the rules of the seminary.
Six weeks before graduation, David contacted an About U consultant looking for assistance. He decided that the priesthood was not for him, but he was confused about his future. He took the About U Report and met with the consultant to develop a plan of action.
The information in the Report indicated that he was action-oriented with a scientific bent and an interest in the outdoors. They concluded that he might have a career interest in environmental science. A couple of years later he received is MS in Environmental Sciences and is now working in that capacity for a small oil company.
At this time, he is very fulfilled in his job, is earning a nice income, and is successfully paying off his student loans.
